Past vs Present Perfect

The biggest headache in English tenses is choosing between simple past and present perfect. Here is the shortcut: if the time is finished and gone, use simple past.

"I lived in Paris" means you don't anymore. "I've lived in Paris for three years" means you're still there. The difference is small but it changes everything the listener pictures. Try it with five sentences about your own life and the pattern starts to feel obvious.
