The vs. A Test
Ask yourself one question: does the listener know exactly which item you mean? "Pass me the salt" works because there's only one salt shaker on the table. "I need a pen" works because any pen will do and you're not pointing at a specific one.

A first mention usually uses "a" or "an," and the second mention often switches to "the." Watch: "I bought a book yesterday. The book was fascinating." This simple first-second pattern covers many article decisions you'll face in real conversations.
