LESSON 1 · Everyday Expressions & Idioms

Context Is Everything

Idioms signal belonging. When you drop one naturally into conversation, native speakers unconsciously register you as more fluent. But timing matters. Using an idiom in a formal presentation can sound too casual. Using one in a job interview can show personality.

One common mistake is translating idioms from your native language into English. They almost never survive the trip. Instead, collect English idioms by listening, not translating. Write them down when you hear them on podcasts or in conversations.
