LESSON 2 · Everyday Expressions & Idioms

Separable or Inseparable?

Phrasal verbs do not follow one neat transitive rule. Some transitive phrasal verbs are separable: "turn the light off" / "turn off the light." Others are inseparable: "run into a friend," not "run a friend into." Intransitive phrasal verbs take no object at all: "The plane took off."

So learn the pattern with the verb, and when a pronoun appears, remember the separable rule: "turn it off," not "turn off it."
