Words Are Only Half
When your British colleague says "that's an interesting idea," they might mean "that's a terrible idea." English is full of indirect communication, where the real meaning hides behind polite words.

Every culture has its own level of directness, but English — especially British English — operates on multiple layers. The surface layer is the words. The deeper layer is the tone, context, and relationship between the speakers.
