LESSON 5 · Everyday Expressions & Idioms

The British Politeness Decoder

British English often has a gap between what is said and what is meant, especially in professional settings:

  • "With all due respect" may signal disagreement
  • "I'll bear that in mind" may politely close the topic
  • "That's quite good" can be mild praise rather than strong praise
  • "Not bad" can mean genuinely good
  • "I'm sure it's my fault" may soften criticism

These are not lies. They are context cues. Treat them as reasons to listen for tone, follow-up action, and relationship, not as automatic translations. American English is more direct in many settings but still has blind spots: "Let's circle back" often means "I don't want to discuss this now."
