LESSON 1 · Write It Right

Subject Lines That Work

Your subject line decides whether your email gets opened or buried. Vague subjects like "Hello" or "Quick question" give the reader no reason to prioritize you. Specific subjects like "Budget approval needed by Friday" tell them exactly what to expect and when.

Three proven formulas: Action + Topic + Deadline ("Review Q3 report by Thursday"), Question format ("Can we move the meeting to 2pm?"), and FYI format ("FYI: Client feedback on the proposal"). Never leave the subject line empty — it is the fastest way to look unprofessional. When a thread changes topic, update the subject: "Re: Re: Re: Monday" tells nobody anything.
