Building Your Reasoning Toolkit

To think like Holmes, pair observation with structured reasoning:

  • Observe first — gather data before forming any hypothesis
  • Name your method — know whether you are using deduction (certain), induction (probable), or abduction (plausible)
  • Stay provisional — treat abductive conclusions as open; new evidence can overturn them
  • Generate rivals — the first explanation is rarely the best, so list more than one
  • Keep a detail journal — for one week, write down three unusual observations a day.
