The Elimination Method

"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." This is Holmes's most quoted line and his most dangerous piece of advice.

But the method has a critical flaw: it assumes your list of possibilities is complete. If you have missed a possibility — one you never thought of — then eliminating everything on your list leaves you with nothing. Real-world problems rarely come with a complete menu of options.
