Your Argument Construction Checklist

Before presenting any important argument:

  • State your claim in one clear sentence — if you cannot, you are not ready to argue
  • List your three strongest pieces of evidence and verify each one independently
  • Explain the reasoning chain — how does each piece connect to your claim?
  • Name the two strongest counter-arguments and prepare a specific response to each
  • Check for hidden assumptions — what must be true for your argument to work?
