The Steel Man Approach

A straw man is a weakened version of someone's argument, easy to knock down. A steel man is the opposite: you build their argument up before responding.

Steel-manning forces you to actually understand the opposing view. It shows intellectual honesty that earns respect. And sometimes, building the strongest version of their argument reveals they have a point you had not considered.
