A 1940s teaching maxim from Dr. Theodore Woodward
Dr. Theodore Woodward, a physician at the University of Maryland, told his students: 'When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras.' The line stuck, and 'zebra' became doctors' shorthand for an exotic, improbable diagnosis when a common one fits the symptoms just as well.
