LESSON 2 · The Mental Models Playbook
Why Inversion Works
Forward thinking asks: what should I do? Inversion asks: what should I avoid? The power difference comes from asymmetry:
- Failure modes are finite — there are limited ways for things to go badly wrong, but infinite paths to success
- Failure patterns repeat — the same mistakes recur across fields, while success is often a one-off
- Avoiding failure is controllable — you can reliably dodge known mistakes, but you cannot reliably engineer breakthroughs
- Obstacles become visible — inversion surfaces risks that optimistic forward thinking overlooks.
