LESSON 6 · Tame the Anxiety Monster

Self-Help as a Partner

The ideal is not self-help versus professional help. It is self-help alongside professional help. Therapy happens for one hour a week. The other 167 hours are yours to manage.

Self-help tools — breathing exercises, journaling, mindfulness, cognitive restructuring — work best between sessions, reinforcing what you learn.

Think of it like physical therapy after an injury. The therapist shows the exercises and tracks progress, but healing happens through the daily work you do on your own. Skip the exercises, and recovery stalls.
