LESSON 3 · Why You Are the Way You Are

Lost in Translation

You bring your partner flowers every week. They never seem to notice. They keep asking you to put your phone down during dinner. You think: "I just bought you flowers - isn't that enough?" The problem may not be love. It may be that your care is arriving in a form your partner does not notice.

Gary Chapman's love languages framework describes five common ways people express and receive love. Many people lean toward one or two channels that feel especially meaningful to them.

The idea is simple, but the evidence for a strict matching effect is mixed. Couples can still use the framework as a conversation starter: ask which forms of affection land best, then show care in ways your partner can actually feel.
