LESSON 3 · Burnout: Recognize, Recover, Prevent

Phase Three: Rebuilding

The final phase: building a sustainable relationship with work — engagement without constant depletion. Most plans fail here, because people slide back into old patterns once they feel better.

Redefine success. If your old definition required sacrificing your health, it was failure dressed up as achievement.

Schedule recovery as a non-negotiable commitment. Athletes spend as much time recovering as training. Knowledge workers should too.

Monitor warning signs with a weekly check-in: sleep, cynicism, withdrawal, interest.

Reconnect with purpose. Burnout severs the tie between work and meaning. Remind yourself why you chose this path — purpose is the antidote to cynicism.
