LESSON 3 · Burnout: Recognize, Recover, Prevent

Phase Two: Structural Repair

Once stabilized, the real work begins. Phase two addresses the root causes — the mismatches between demands and resources.

Identify the primary mismatch. Review Maslach's six factors: workload, control, reward, community, fairness, values. Which one is most responsible? That becomes your main repair target.

Have the difficult conversation. If workload is the issue, talk to your manager about realistic expectations. If it's autonomy, negotiate more decision-making authority.

These talks feel impossible when burned out, because your confidence is at its lowest. Practice what you want to say. Bring documentation.
