LESSON 1 · What Actually Drives You

Applying the Framework

SDT changes how you approach motivation.

For yourself: Diagnose the unmet need. Bored and disengaged? You lack autonomy — you need more control. Frustrated and stagnant? You lack competence — you need the right level of challenge. Lonely at the task? You lack relatedness — you need connection to people and purpose.

For others: Drop the bonuses and threats. Give real choice in how work gets done, set challenges that are hard but achievable, and build a culture where people feel valued.

For parenting: Instead of rewarding grades, help your child find genuine interest in learning. Instead of punishing misbehavior, help them build internal standards.
