LESSON 1 · What Actually Drives You
Beyond Carrots and Sticks
The most motivated people are not chasing the biggest rewards or fleeing the worst punishments. They have found intrinsic alignment between their values, skills, and work.
This alignment does not happen by accident. It requires self-knowledge: what you care about (values), what you are good at (competence), what conditions let you thrive (autonomy, relatedness).
If you constantly need external motivation — deadlines, accountability partners, rewards — the problem probably is not discipline. It is alignment.
Before reaching for another productivity hack, ask: Do I have enough control? Am I being challenged? Am I connected to people and purpose? Fix the conditions, and motivation takes care of itself.
