LESSON 4 · What Actually Drives You

Identity-Based Motivation

The most durable motivation is identity-based: you act not because of a goal you want to reach but because of the person you want to be.

Goal-based: "I want to lose 20 pounds." This works until you hit a plateau or reach the goal and lose the driver.

Identity-based: "I am someone who takes care of my body." This works indefinitely because it isn't tied to an outcome.

Start with identity and work backward:

  • "I am a writer" leads to writing daily
  • "I am an athlete" leads to consistent training
  • "I am a learner" leads to regular reading.
