LESSON 1 · Escape Toxic Patterns

Beyond the Label

"Narcissist" has become one of the most overused words in pop psychology. Your difficult boss, your self-centered ex, your dramatic friend — everyone gets the label. But narcissistic personality disorder is a specific clinical condition that affects about 1% of people.

Narcissistic traits, though, exist on a spectrum. Many people show some narcissistic behaviors without meeting the clinical threshold.

The core of narcissism is not arrogance or self-love. It is a fragile self-image that needs constant outside reinforcement. The grandiosity you see on the surface is a defense against a deep, often unconscious, sense of inadequacy underneath.
