LESSON 3 · Escape Toxic Patterns
The Guilt Trap
The number one reason people fail to hold boundaries is guilt. The number one source of that guilt is confusing a boundary with rejection.
Setting a boundary does not mean you stopped loving someone. "I cannot talk right now" does not mean "I do not care about your problem." It means "I am not in a state to help well."
People who resist your boundaries often reframe them as rejection: "I guess you do not care about me." That is emotional manipulation meant to trigger your guilt and collapse the limit.
The antidote: separate the boundary from the relationship. "I love you, and I will not lend you money again." Both statements are true at once. Guilt is a feeling, not a fact.
