LESSON 2 · Your Brain's Hidden Shortcuts

Framing in Communication

Every message is framed — on purpose or by accident. Spotting frames gives you control over how your words land.

  • Work. "We missed three targets this quarter" vs "We hit seven of ten." Both true.
  • Health. "90% fat-free" vs "contains 10% fat." People reach for the first label, though the two describe the same food.
  • Relationships. "You never help with dinner" vs "I'd really appreciate help tonight." One is a loss-framed accusation; the other is a gain-framed request.
  • Self-talk. "I have to exercise" vs "I get to exercise." Reframing an obligation as a choice cuts resentment and boosts motivation.
