LESSON 3 · The New Rules of Commitment
Whose Rules Are These?
The man should propose. Couples should spend every evening together. Money stays a private matter. Most couples follow rules like these without ever agreeing to them. They are inherited scripts from family, culture, or religion, and they may have nothing to do with the two people actually in the room.
Writing your own rules is not rebellion. It is choosing on purpose. Keep what fits, drop what doesn't, and write fresh agreements for situations your parents never faced. The real danger is the unexamined rule, because it runs the relationship on autopilot while each partner quietly assumes the other signed up for the same plan.
