LESSON 3 · The New Rules of Commitment

Rules Worth Writing

Four areas cause most of the friction, and each deserves an explicit agreement.

  • Division of labor — who does what at home, and how that splits when one person's schedule changes
  • Finances — joint, separate, or hybrid accounts, and the spending amount that triggers a conversation
  • Communication — whether serious topics are face-to-face only, and your signal for "I need space" versus "I'm pulling away"
  • Boundaries with others — how much say in-laws, friends, and exes get in your decisions

These talks feel awkward up front. They prevent the slow buildup of unspoken resentment that quietly wears a relationship down.
