LESSON 3 · The New Rules of Commitment

Your Rule-Writing Workshop

Try this with your partner this week.

  • List your inherited rules and ask of each one: did we choose this, or just absorb it?
  • Walk the four areas — labor, finances, communication, and boundaries — and say what each of you actually needs
  • Write one clear agreement per area, in plain words you'll both remember
  • Be specific — "we talk before any purchase over $200" beats "we're careful with money"
  • Add a revisit clause — "if this stops working, we change it" keeps a rule from turning into a trap

The relationships that feel best are the ones built to fit the actual people in them.
