LESSON 3 · Break the Yelling Cycle
Your De-Escalation Script
Use this sequence during the next meltdown:
- Step 1: Breathe once yourself before speaking — your calm comes first
- Step 2: Drop to their level and let your voice go quiet
- Step 3: Validate the feeling: "You're really frustrated right now"
- Step 4: Show empathy: "I understand you wanted that. It's hard"
- Step 5: Hold the boundary calmly: "I can't let you have it, AND I'm here with you"
These phrases do not work every time on the first try. But they work over time as your child learns that their feelings are safe with you. That safety is the foundation of the emotional regulation they will carry into adulthood.
