Getting Cooperation Without Conflict

Replace power struggles with these strategies:

  • Connect before directing — name, touch, eye contact, then instruction
  • Say it once and follow through with action, not repetition
  • Reduce your total instructions — ask yourself "does this really need to happen right now?"
  • Make it playful — "Race you to the bathroom for teeth brushing" works better than "go brush your teeth"
  • Give advance warnings — "In five minutes, we're leaving the park" prevents transition meltdowns.
