When To Step In

Natural consequences have a hard limit: you can't let a toddler dash into traffic to "learn" about cars. Anything touching safety, health, or harm to others needs a firm boundary now, not a lesson later.

When you have to step in, reach for a logical consequence wrapped in empathy: "I can't let you throw blocks — someone could get hurt. I'm putting them away for now. You can try again after lunch." Same words, no warmth, and it lands as punishment. The empathy is what keeps the lesson from feeling like revenge.
