Power of 'We'
Swapping "you" for "we" transforms the dynamic. "You need to clean up" puts child vs parent. "Let's clean up together" puts you on the same team. Even if you are not actually cleaning, the word "let's" signals partnership.

Another powerful tool is the when-then structure: "When you finish brushing your teeth, then we'll read a story." This frames the task as the child's choice of timing rather than a flat demand, and it motivates because they can see the reward waiting.
