Your Cooperation Language Upgrade

Practice these shifts until they become automatic:

  • Replace commands with questions that give the child a role in the solution
  • Use "let's" and "we" to create a team dynamic instead of a power struggle
  • Offer two choices — both acceptable to you — so the child feels in control
  • Use when-then sequences to show the path from task to reward
  • Say what you want, not what you don't so the child knows exactly what to do

Cooperation phrases are not magic. They will not work every time, especially with overtired or overwhelmed children.
