LESSON 4 · End the Power Struggle

Systems Over Willpower

A system removes daily negotiations. When the chart says "brush teeth next," you are not the bad guy — the system is the authority. This removes you from the power struggle entirely.

Build the system with your child:

  1. List everything that needs to happen (morning routine, after school, bedtime)
  2. Let them choose the order where possible
  3. Keep it short — include only the steps that actually cause friction
  4. Post it where they can see it independently

The magic happens when your child checks the chart instead of asking you. That is autonomy. That is the beginning of self-management — and one less thing you have to police.
