LESSON 1 · Release the Parent Guilt
Three Flavors of Guilt
Not all guilt is the same:
- Productive guilt — a real gap between your values and your behavior. Action: change the behavior
- Comparative guilt — triggered by parents who seem to do it better. Action: remember you are seeing their highlight reel, not their reality
- Impossible-standard guilt — comes from chasing the perfect parent. Action: lower the bar to "good enough"
Most parent guilt is the second or third type — not a problem to fix, but a perception to adjust. The test is simple: can you do something about it? If yes, do it and let the guilt go. If not, the guilt is not useful.
