LESSON 4 · Release the Parent Guilt

When They Push You Away

Sometimes you do everything right and your child still turns their back, crosses their arms, or snaps "go away." The repair does not always get accepted on your schedule.

Do not chase it. Pressuring a hurt child to forgive you on cue makes the moment about your relief, not theirs. Instead, leave the door open and let them walk through it:

  • Say it once: "I am here whenever you are ready."
  • Then stay nearby and calm. Fold laundry. Read. Be a steady presence, not a hovering one.
  • Let them set the pace. Reconnection often arrives sideways — a question, a small request — not a hug.
