The Balance Point
The opposite of yelling is not silence. The opposite of harsh discipline is not no discipline. The goal is a middle path that is both warm and firm.
Warm without firm produces children who cannot handle frustration. They expect the world to accommodate them and fall apart when it does not. Firm without warm produces children who comply out of fear but rebel the moment the authority figure leaves.
The balance sounds like "Your feelings are valid AND the rule still applies" or "I understand this is hard AND you still need to do it." Both halves stay true at the same time.
