LESSON 1 · Screens: The Modern Battle

Beyond the Headlines

Screen research is nuanced — not all screen time is equal. A child video-calling their grandparent is having a social experience. A child passively watching YouTube compilations is not. The quality spectrum:

  • Interactive and creative: coding, art apps, building games — develops skills
  • Educational but passive: nature documentaries, read-along apps — some benefit
  • Passive entertainment: cartoons, YouTube — limited benefit, strong novelty cues
  • Social media and scrolling: higher risk, especially when it displaces sleep, movement, and real relationships

Your job is not to eliminate screens. It is to shape the diet. Just as you would not serve only candy, you should not serve only passive content.
