Boundaries as Care

The exact same rule lands differently depending on how you phrase it. Frame the limit as something you are giving, and try these swaps:

  • "I'm protecting your sleep" instead of "No screens before bed"
  • "Your eyes need a break" instead of "Turn that off"
  • "We're making time for the fun stuff" instead of "Screen time is over"
  • "I want us to actually talk tonight" instead of "Phones away"

When the boundary sounds like care rather than a ban, resistance drops. Your child may still not like it, but the message they hear is different.
