Boundaries as Care
The exact same rule lands differently depending on how you phrase it. Frame the limit as something you are giving, and try these swaps:
- "I'm protecting your sleep" instead of "No screens before bed"
- "Your eyes need a break" instead of "Turn that off"
- "We're making time for the fun stuff" instead of "Screen time is over"
- "I want us to actually talk tonight" instead of "Phones away"
When the boundary sounds like care rather than a ban, resistance drops. Your child may still not like it, but the message they hear is different.
