LESSON 4 · Screens: The Modern Battle

The Long Game

Every screen boundary you hold now builds your child's ability to self-regulate later. You will not always be there to set the timer. They need internal controls, not just external ones. Build toward self-regulation in stages:

  • Age 6-8: You set all limits. They follow them.
  • Age 9-11: They propose limits. You approve or adjust.
  • Age 12-14: They set their own limits with your oversight.
  • Age 15+: They manage independently while you stay available.

Each stage hands over slightly more autonomy. A child who never had limits cannot suddenly self-regulate at fifteen.
