The Comparison Trap

Even a flattering comparison feeds rivalry. "Why can't you be organized like your sister?" stings — but so does "You're the funny one," which can lock a child into a role they then feel they cannot step out of.

The fix is to swap comparison for specific, individual praise:

  • Don't: "You're so much neater than your brother."
  • Do: "I noticed you organized your desk — that took real effort."
  • Don't: "Be more like your sister."
  • Do: "You stayed patient just now. That was hard."

Describe what one child actually did, with no sibling in the sentence. Each child is an individual, not a data point on a family ranking chart.
