When a child misbehaves and you immediately correct them, their brain registers threat, not teaching. The amygdala fires, cortisol floods, and learning centers shut down. Correcting an emotionally activated child is like trying to fill a cup that is upside down.

Connection first means ensuring the child feels seen and safe before you address behavior. This is not permissiveness — it is neuroscience. A calm, connected brain can process feedback. A stressed brain cannot. The sequence matters: connect, then redirect.
