Connection Is Not Reward

Parents worry that connecting before correcting rewards bad behavior. It does not. Connection communicates safety, not approval. A child who feels safe can hear correction without defensiveness.

Think of it as triage: stabilize the patient before treating the wound. You are not celebrating the injury. You are creating conditions where healing can actually happen. This distinction makes all the difference between discipline that teaches and discipline that damages.
