The Trouble With "Good Job"

"Good job" is the reflex phrase of modern parenting, and it does almost nothing. It is a verdict, not information. The child hears that you approved, but not what you approved of, so there is nothing to repeat on purpose.

A strange thing happens to heavily praised kids: they get more careful, not braver. Studies of praise suggest that when approval is constant, children start guarding it.
