LESSON 1 · Parenting Your Teenager
Two Systems, Two Timelines
A teenager is not choosing to be reckless — their brain is wired on two clocks. The system that drives emotion and reward comes online early, so feelings and the pull of novelty hit hard. The system that weighs consequences and resists impulse keeps maturing into the mid-twenties.
That gap explains a lot:
- A calm teen can act on feeling in a heartbeat.
- Rewards now outshine risks later.
- Judgment is still being built, not broken.
Knowing the timeline lets you coach the impulse instead of just punishing the result.
