LESSON 1 · Parenting Your Teenager

Stay the Safe Harbor

When you win every argument, your teen learns to stop bringing you the hard stuff. The aim is the opposite: be the person they call at 2 a.m. when a plan goes wrong.

That means protecting the connection even while you disagree:

  • Listen first, react second — let them finish before you weigh in.
  • Separate the person from the choice — "I love you, I don't love this idea."
  • Leave the door open — "We'll figure it out together" beats "I told you so."

A teen who trusts you with small mistakes will trust you with the dangerous ones.
