LESSON 4 · Parenting Your Teenager

From Manager to Consultant

Leaving home does not end your relationship. It changes the job. For years you were the manager — setting rules, fixing problems, making the calls.

Before they go, say the thing out loud. Something like: I trust you. You will make mistakes, and that is exactly how you learn. I am always here, and I will never judge you for asking for help. Years from now, when something goes wrong at midnight, that is the voice they will hear before they decide whether to call. Make sure it is a warm one.
