LESSON 2 · Your Gut: The Hidden Brain
Supplements vs Fermented Foods
Fermented foods and probiotic supplements are not interchangeable. Fermented foods deliver live bacteria in their natural matrix, along with nutrients, organic acids, and bioactive compounds that a capsule cannot replicate. A cup of kefir, for example, brings a varied mix of bacterial strains plus protein, calcium, and B vitamins.
Supplements offer the opposite trade-off: precise dosing of specific strains studied for particular conditions. For targeted use — like easing irritable bowel symptoms with a strain proven for it — the right strain at the right dose can outperform even the best fermented food.
