LESSON 3 · Exercise Science 101

Flexibility vs Mobility

Flexibility is the passive range of motion of a joint — how far you can stretch with external force. Mobility is the active range of motion — how far you can move a joint under your own muscular control.

A dancer with extreme flexibility but no strength at end range is at higher injury risk than someone with moderate flexibility and strength throughout. The goal should be having enough mobility to perform your activities with control, not achieving maximum possible range for its own sake.
