Kohl eyeliner
Kohl was a dark paste ground from lead ore. Beyond looking striking, the thick line helped reduce glare and keep flies away, and some researchers think the formula may have had a mild antibacterial effect around the eye. It is worth noting that kohl is lead-based and toxic, so it is not something to copy today.
