Know The Spectrum

Guarding is a dial, not a switch. At the mild end, a dog just stiffens or eats faster over the bowl. At the severe end, it lunges or snaps at anyone who nears its bed.

Most dogs sit at the mild to moderate end, and patient trades can turn them around at home.

But be honest about the line. If your dog has already broken skin, or if you feel genuinely unsafe practicing, stop and call a certified veterinary behaviorist. Severe guarding needs a pro and a safety plan, not a solo experiment.
