The Approach Protocol

The three-second rule prevents overwhelming greetings. Allow three seconds of sniffing, then gently guide the dog away. If the dog re-approaches the person on its own, allow another three-second interaction. Voluntary re-engagement is the dog's way of saying "I want more." Forced interaction teaches them to dread strangers.

Dogs that are shy with new people are not being rude — they are protecting themselves, and the three-second rule lets them set the pace.
